Travelling with your Puppy

  • Making the journey comfortable
It is important that your puppy has an empty stomach before you start your journey.  Their last meal should be between three and four hours before the journey.  Always allow your puppy to relieve itself before you set out. Remember to drive with extra care, being cautious at sharp bends and when travelling up and down steep hills.  Always ensure that there is fresh air circulating throughout the car. Your puppy can feel safe and secure in a covered, portable crate.
  • Travel Sickness
For the majority of dogs car sickness is related to the stress of their journey rather than the motion of the car.  It has been said that the car journey is one of a dogs most powerful memories, being the journey in which took it away from its mother and the rest of its litter.
There are a number of ways in which you can help your puppy and turn a car journey into a positive experience: Firstly it is important that your puppy associates car journeys with good and positive things, to do this can take some time, you need to adapt them slowly. Start by taking your puppy on a very short car journey between five and ten minutes.  At the end of the journey reward your puppy to make it a really positive experience.  A suitable reward could be a walk, toys and treats.
You can then gradually build up the length of the journey and continue to reward your puppy when you return.

  • Travel Tips
  1. When travelling use a crate which your puppy is used to, it will make your puppy feel more secure in its surroundings.
  2. Your puppy should be exercised before you start your journey and given a chance to relieve itself.
  3. Your puppy must have access to fresh drinking water throughout your journey. To prevent them from getting dehydrated fit travel water bowl to their crate and take water with you.  If you are concerned that your puppy is dehydrated there are products on the market such as a powwow re-hydration fluid.
  4. Some dogs are prone to travel sickness, so it’s important to observe your puppy for any signs of sickness and distress.  There are certain products on the market which can help reduce these problems such as travel remedies and travel treats.
  5. You should NEVER leave your dog in the car in hot sunny conditions, even for a short time.  Leaving windows open is insufficient.  In extreme heat do not travel with your puppy unless it is completely necessary, if possible use sun shades and sun screens in your car and have dehydration fluid with you.
  6. Schedule frequent stops in your journey especially if you’re traveling for longer than two hours.  During your stop your puppy should have a short walk, fresh water and a chance to relieve itself.
  7. For peace of mind you could also carry a First Aid Travel Kit this contains everything may need should there be an emergency.
